Yesterday while driving my truck around with friends I figured out I had a transmission leak. Tonight I calculated my mileage, I got 3.2 miles to the gallon yesterday, for the sake of my pocketbook I have to get this trans leak fixed. It's making my truck chug gas. EDIT: I did my math wrong, I got 8.8 MPG. Its still less than I should be getting, so the trans leak is still effecting my gas mileage. :(

I find this post both amusing and topical.

11 gal in 35 miles? You might want to start looking for a fuel leak... haha

No that's the amount that's left out of 15 gallons. Unless I used the app wrong

Ya, Im in the process of editing the post right now. I mathed wrong, lol. The leak is still effecting the mileage, just not as bad as I thought. I should be getting about 13-14 how Im shifting, Im still not good at driving stick.

Makes me feel better about finding out that I get a whopping 9.8 MPG's today! I'm sure warming up the car for ten minutes every day hasn't helped that at all though.

The way Im shifting I should be getting at least 13-14 MPG out of the 4.0, so anything below 11 is out of the margin of error and worrysome. I hope the trans issue hasnt damaged the engine at all

I wouldn't worry about it to much. I don't think it would damage much yet. As long as everything still feels right. Is it just a drip or a pretty good leak?

It was just a drip yesterday, but now its leaking pretty good. Shes staying on my driveway until sunday when Nibbles comes over and helps me replace the input seal

Good. It's probably a good idea to replace the trans fluid anyway. I know I have to for mine. Unless that was one of the fluids recently replaced before you got it.

He replaced everything, but from my records I dont think the Input seal has ever been replaced. I'll have to go through them again. But that part could be from 1993

Is this 8.8 in dense city traffic? Because that can and will affect mileage.
Also, have you done a good tune up yet? You'd be surprised how little things like full tires can improve mileage.

You're probably launching the car. When you're getting started, learn to ride the clutch a little, keep the revs lower, and that should help. Also, learn what the torque curve is for your truck. It may have optimal shifts between a certain rev range that can help you maximize power to get to cruising speed so you can throw it into 5th and not worry about it.
8mpg is really bad though. My V12 does over double that. You've got a really big problem.

The trans is leaking quite a bit of gear oil, I think thats why I'm getting such bad MPGs. Nibbles and I think its the Input Seal.

No, We mostly were on the freeway yesterday. No tune up yet, I'll do that after sunday. I have a bad trans leak, Nibbles and I think its the Input Seal. He's coming by on sunday to work on it with me

i'm not so sure honestly. I mean, losing trans fluid will cause problems, but i've never heard of it causing fuel consumption to increase at a ridiculously alarming rate. I would expect it to no longer stay in gear and shift very sloppily, not cripple your fuel economy.
what are the normal idle RPM, and what RPMs are you shifting at? Unless your truck is just puking gas somewhere, something is very wrong.

Also, The exhaust leaks out of the tip when The truck is running. But I chocked that up to moisture in the exhaust
